The Mousuni Island tourist center in Namkhana suffered significant damage during the recent full moon-triggered high tides. Every cottage at the tourist center was affected, with owners stating that extensive repairs would be required to restore the facilities.
According to local sources, this tourist center, located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal, was established in 2018 and has since become a popular destination for travelers. Currently, the tourist center has 62 cottages, which have sustained extensive damage due to the tides.
Additionally, the jetties with outdoor seating areas were completely demolished. Abhishek Roy, a cottage owner, remarked, "There was a lot of damage to the cottages in Purnima Kotal. There are about four more major kotals expected in the coming days. If the river embankment is not repaired now, not only the tourist center but the entire island will suffer."
In response to the damages, Abdul Qayyum Khan, deputy head of the Mousuni village panchayat, commented on the varying movements of the river and the extent of the damage caused by the kotal. He assured that initial repair work is being undertaken as much as possible by the Gram Panchayat and that the matter has been reported to the irrigation department for further assistance.
The recurring nature of natural calamities and major floods in the region has historically led to repeated damage to the tourist center, necessitating constant repairs and rearrangements to maintain its appeal to visitors.
